When Apple released the April 2002 PowerBooks, we moved to
stopped updating our "December 2001" PowerBook buyer's
guide in favor of supporting the latest
model. Usually when Apple refreshes a product line like
the PowerBook, online stores bring out some enticing bundles
and price cuts to help clear out their remaining stock of
older models.
We were positively floored to discover that several stores
are actually charging a $100 premium for the older G4/667
PowerBooks! Perhaps this is because the new G4/667 is the
"low end" machine and, as such, has half the RAM
of the old G4/667, 256 MB as opposed to 512 MB. The new G4/667
also lacks an AirPort card and infrared port. On the positive
side, the new G4/667 has a faster graphics chip with double
the memory. It also has a DVI port instead of RGB.
At roughly $2200, the G4/550 has received a $100 price cut
and is now represents the cheapest combination drive PowerBook
available. If there is enough interest, we may check the availability
of the October 2001 PowerBooks which sported DVD-ROM drives.
There may be some good deals to be had there... Below, we
have present you with the current prices, availability and
bundles offered with the "December 2001" PowerBooks.
Happy shopping!
